Hello Potters
From the President
The club attended its first ever Backyard Bonanza in Bracken Ridge last month. It was a beautiful day and a great opportunity to let the community know about the club. We had positive feedback and interest in memberships. Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered.
Our last sales event for the year will be the Creative Trail, held over the last two weekends of October. To participate, watch out for our upcoming email with sign up links for volunteering with the cleaning bee and studio sales. There will also be details on how you can provide pieces for sale. What about making a magnet or two for our fundraiser? By joining the Creative Trail, you connect with fellow art lovers and support our vibrant local arts community
Check out SasArts facebook page and website for all the details on the artists and artspaces you can visit during those weekends. We have some amazing artists in our area and they are well worth a visit. So much inspiration to be gained!
If you are interested in joining the club next year or just want to try your hand at some of the clay fun, then join our workshops – no experience necessary! See our website for session times and booking details.
This year is the first year we have made it compulsory for members to participate in volunteering at the club. It’s been fabulous to see so many new faces doing their bit to make the club run smoothly and sparkle. We’re excited to welcome even more members to join our volunteer efforts and help make a difference. To renew your membership for 2026, you must complete your volunteering requirement by December 31st 2025. Please ensure you participate before this date to allow your memberships to be renewed for 2026. To find available volunteering opportunities, visit helloClub, speak with a Supervisor or email us at shorncliffepotteryclubinc@gmail.com . We’re here to help you find a task that suits your requirements. By volunteering, you not only help our club thrive but also have the chance to meet fellow members and contribute to a vibrant community spirit.
Is anyone planning to head to Fremantle in October for Wedge 2025? If so we would love to hear from you.
Happy potting
Suzanne

Clay Sales and Cookies
Unfortunately 😳 a few pugs of clay have disappeared from the inventory this year. In an attempt to cut down on stock loss we will conduct more frequent audits and will now ask that all club retail purchases (includes CLAY, GLAZES, and CLUB merchandise) be paid for as you receive it.
The cookies are doing a great job in protecting our kiln shelves and saving members from paying for a new kiln shelf! After some review we have decided we need to amend the price for replacing cookies to cover costs, from a ‘one size for all’ $2 each to $2 for small, $4 for medium and $6 for large. As always you are welcome to provide your own cookies, please just refer to the specifications located on the members only page on the club website.
We have popped all of the published tips, hacks and techniques onto the ‘Tips’ page on our club website so that you can search for them easily.
Downward Pressure in Coil Building
When coil building, joining coils downwards by pinching and smoothing them into the previous layer is a crucial technique. This downward technique, often referred to as "bonding pinch," creates a strong and seamless connection between the coils, preventing cracking and ensuring structural integrity.
Scoring and Slipping:
Before attaching a new coil, it's beneficial to score the top edge of the existing coil and the bottom of the new coil with a tool or by scratching it with a fork. Then, apply a thin layer of slip (watered-down clay) to both surfaces. This acts as a "glue" to help the coils bond together. ®
Bonding Pinch:
When joining the coils, use your fingers to press down firmly on the new coil, pushing it into the scored and slipped surface of the previous layer. This downward motion helps blend the clay and eliminate any gaps or weak spots.
Smoothing and Compressing:
After the bonding pinch, use your fingers or a rib to smooth the surface of the clay. This movement helps compress the clay’s particles preventing cracking.
